Coffee berries, which contain the coffee bean, are produced by several species of small evergreen bush of the genus Coffea. The two most commonly grown species are Coffea canephora (also known as Coffea robusta) and Coffea arabica. These are cultivated in Latin America, southeast Asia, and Africa. Once ripe, coffee berries are picked, processed, and dried. The seeds are then roasted, undergoing several physical and chemical changes. They are roasted to various degrees, depending on the desired flavor. They are then ground and brewed to create coffee. Coffee can be prepared and presented by a variety of methods.

This is our **free-shipping** (within the continental US), specialty-coffee auction for coffee roasters.  Stock up on great, specialty coffee at a low, all-in price. That is only $3.59/lb, delivered anywhere in the continental US.

You are bidding on Colonia Challamayo (single terroir), 2007/08-crop, 100% specialty, Arabica (Tipica 80%, Caturra 20%) green, unroasted coffee beans.  These beans were shade-grown in the higher altitudes of the Caranavi region, depulped and washed using pure Andes glacier-melt water, sun-dried on wooden table tops and hand selected by "Palliris" (Aymara Indian women food graders).  These are not "commodity coffee" beans.  Unlike other coffee sellers, we give you the year of the crop, the specific quality grade, and the name of the farmer Co-Op behind them, not some meaningless, unsupported adjectives like "top grade" or "fresh".

This auction is for sixty six (66) pounds of one of the best, professionally graded and cupped, specialty coffees in the world shipped to you in a boxed, burlap bag.  It is cheaper to ship green coffee in plastic bags (like many coffee dealers do), but  green coffee beans need to "breathe" and we rather go through the added expense to maintain the high quality of our coffee.  Besides everybody loves our organic, biodegradable burlap bags.  There are too many un-recyclable plastic bags already!

Please read our extensive eBay coffee-products buyers' feedback (100% positive, close to 2,100 transactions. over 1,115 distinct buyers, over 550 repeat customers) and bid with confidence.  We are very proud of our record and reputation.  We are eBay's Gold-level Power Sellers.  In order to reach the Gold-level distinction, Ebay sellers must uphold the eBay community values, including honesty, timeliness and mutual respect and maintain average monthly sales of more than $10,000, and a Feedback level of 98% or higher.  Only a few, select eBay sellers reach this level of distinction and recognition.  Please check our other auctions for other grades and quantities, as well as coffee gear. To learn more about us please visit our about  page.

Because of its flavor and aroma (see cupping notes above) we prefer a moderately dark (#45 Agtron/SCCA) roast for these coffee beans.  However, other roasters prefer it darker-roasted.  Some roasters drink it as a single-varietal, others use as a mandatory component of their special "house" blend. Try all combinations and decide!

These coffee beans are organic, certified by BioLatina, and Fair Trade, certified by FLO International.  Copies of all certificates are available on our website.

The 66-lb bag, a half-sack, is intended for the commercial roaster, and/or for the home roaster who wants to buy in bulk and save on unit prices and shipping charges.  Because they are grown at high altitudes (hard bean) and below the Equator, our green coffee beans can be stored in a cool, dry location, in the burlap bag supplied, for a long period or time (years) without any loss in flavor or quality.  Beans grown above the Equator (Colombia, Mexico, Central America, Hawaii, etc.) do not keep as well.

Bolivian specialty organic coffee is the current "Hidden Valley" of all specialty coffees.  Find out what the latest buzz is all about.  You may want to read the recent articles in the LA Times, the National Geographic magazine, and the BBC News.  Several of our growers have won the top four spots on the coveted Cup of Excellence® Awards in the 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2007 competitions. We bought the coveted 2007 competition first-place lot!

We stock and sell only high-quality Bolivian coffee.  All of our coffee beans are organic, the great majority are Fair Trade, and none have defects (rocks, ferment, insect attacks, mold, etc).  We carry both specialty and premium coffee beans.  We also carry, as an accommodation to our customers, high-quality South American blend (Colombian, Peruvian) Swiss-Water® decaffeinated coffee beans.

What is "specialty" coffee?  There are two major species of coffee, robusta and arabicaRobusta is grown at low altitudes, under full sun, has almost twice as much caffeine, and is the main ingredient of cheap, flavorless, "blended" commercial coffee available everywhere.  Arabica, grown at high altitudes (4,000 to 6,500 feet) with abundant rain fall, warm temperatures, fertile soil and adequate shading, develops superior coffee flavors.  Picked by hand only at the peak of ripeness, these arabica beans are processed with care and meticulously graded and separated by bean size and density.  All of the world's great coffees are 100% arabica, but only the top 10% have fine enough flavor to be selected as specialty coffee.  The fine flavor is determined by the cupping score.  To be considered specialty, the cupping score must be at least 80, using the SCAA criteria.

What is "premium" coffee?  According to the SCAA Standard Classification Method, arabica green coffee beans are graded according to Category 1 and Category 2 defect equivalents. Specialty coffee cannot have any Category 1 defects and may only have up to five Category 2 defects.  Premium coffee may only have up to eight defects in either category.  Graded coffee with more than eight defects is considered "commercial" or "below grade".  After cupping, the remaining 90% of the fine arabica coffee, with still superb flavor, is considered premium coffee.

What is "conventional/commercial" coffee?  The remaining coffee, the majority of which is traded in the commodity markets, is considered "conventional/ commercial" coffee.  It includes all robustas and the lower-quality arabicas.

What is "cupping"?  It is a professional technique for evaluating coffee's Fragrance/Aroma, Flavor, Acidity, Body and Aftertaste. To be considered specialty or premium, coffee must exhibit distinct attributes in these five areas.  Moreover, such coffee must be free from odors, faults and taints.

We both export the coffee from Bolivia and import it into the US so that quality is assured every step of the way.  Our US coffee warehouse is located north of Boston.  Because we are vertically integrated nobody can beat our prices.

We cup, roast and drink our own coffee everyday.  Our customers are amazed how good this coffee is and most no longer buy Bolivian coffee from anyone else.  Feel free to contact us if you have any questions about coffee and/or about coffee roasting.  All questions are welcome and are answered promptly.

Coffee Grading:  Let's face it, not all coffee is the same.  How do you ensure that you get consistently good coffee?  You buy professionally-graded coffee.  Our coffee is graded and cupped before it is offered for sale.  Unlike other eBay coffee sellers who claim that their coffee is "top grade" without any documentation or proof, all our coffee beans undergo strict coffee grading using the objective and strict SCAA criteria.  We present the results of the grading process, under our "Coffee Specs", which is the first thing you see on our listings.  The most important factors determining the quality of coffee are bean varietal, bean uniformity and density, altitude grown, soil quality, care and technique in growing, processing, handling and transporting, and the ultimate "proof is in the pudding" criteria, the cupping score.  So next time you buy coffee, don't just take the sellers word for it, ask for objective grading results.  When in doubt, just cup a random sample. That is what we do every day.

Shipping & Insurance Policy:  We ship the same business day payment is received, if payment is received before 2:00pm (EST).  Otherwise, we ship the following business day.  We will ship, for free, via FedEx Ground only to the continental US.  Depending on where you are located, you will receive your coffee the next day or in three to five business days if you are in the West Coast.  Please use the shipping calculator to obtain shipping costs outside the continental US. We ship worldwide and combine shipping.

Because the disappointment and pain of having your order received damaged (or not received at all!) is significantly greater that the cost of insurance we require insurance on all orders $50 or more.  The cost of insurance will be automatically added as "included in shipping and handling cost" on the listing. Be assured that if we list an item "Free Shipping", it is indeed free shipping. The mandatory, nominal cost of insurance appears as Shipping & Handling costs just because the way eBay aggregates costs. Apologies for the confusion.

Feedback & Customer Satisfaction Policy:  We are in the business of keeping customers happy above all reasonable costs, but we are also human.  If you feel your experience with us has been less than exemplary, please contact us and we will try our hardest to keep you a happy, loyal, repeat customer.  Feedback is final, once given it cannot be taken back. If you change you mind about buying a product, before we ship, we will gladly cancel the transaction rather than give you negative feedback. Likewise, please contact us before giving us negative feedback. We will make things right..

Affiliations:  We are proud members of the Specialty Coffee Association of America and the Specialty Coffee Association of Bolivia.  We are also proud members of the Online Auction Sellers Association.

Thank you for bidding. You will love this specialty coffee!
